Acoustics matter


In professional radio studios around the world, you’ll often find broadcasters speaking into rugged dynamic studio microphones. They’re workhorses for a reason: they handle high SPLs, reject handling noise, and sound polished even in demanding broadcast environments.

Yet even in these high-end facilities, acoustic treatment is non-negotiable. Here’s why good room acoustics remain essential—no matter how close you get to a dynamic mic.

1. Dynamic Mics Don’t Magically Eliminate Room Sound

A common misconception is that dynamic microphones are “room-proof” because they’re less sensitive than condensers. In reality, they still capture direct sound plus any reflections bouncing around the space. While dynamic mics are more forgiving and require higher gain (which can amplify room issues if not managed), untreated walls, ceilings, and floors introduce comb filtering, flutter echoes, and unwanted reverb that muddy the signal.

Professional radio studios invest in acoustic treatment precisely because they rely on these mics for clean, intelligible voice.  Professional Dynamic Mics excel at close-range broadcast work, but can’t override poor acoustics on their own.

 

2. Close Miking Is Not a Complete Fix

Voice talent and engineers love to work extremely close to dynamic mics (often 50 to 150mm) for maximum direct sound and natural proximity warmth. This technique helps with isolation and reduces the relative level of distant reflections—but does not eliminate acoustic problems.

Internal acoustics (reverberation and reflections inside the room):

Even at close range, your voice produces early reflections from nearby surfaces that arrive at the mic only milliseconds after the direct sound. These create comb-filtering effects—certain frequencies boost or cancel out, leading to a hollow, boxy, or uneven tone, often with a loss of intelligibility.  Dynamic mics still pick this up, especially in the midrange where voice intelligibility lives. Close miking reduces the proportion of room sound, but in a lively untreated space, the reflections remain audible and degrade clarity.  Acoustic panels, bass traps, and diffusers tame these reflections, giving you a smoother, more natural capture straight from the mic.

Isolation acoustics (sound leaking in or out):

Close miking improves isolation from other sources in the room (another presenter, monitors, or background noise), but it doesn’t stop external sound from entering through walls, doors, or HVAC systems. Nor does it prevent your voice from leaking out and causing issues in multi-studio facilities.  Effective isolation (mass-loaded barriers, decoupled walls, sealing etc) combined with internal absorption ensures a quiet, controlled environment—critical for broadcast where even minor background noise can ruin a live segment.

In short: close mic work is a powerful tool, but it’s a complement to acoustic treatment, not a replacement. Many home studios and project spaces learn this the hard way—great mic, poor room = disappointing recordings that need heavy EQ and denoising in post.
