Acoustic Primedia Studios
Situated in the heart of Sandton, is a broadcast facility consisting of two commercial radio stations, 947 and 702, as well as a TV Production consisting of 2 x TV studios and an Audio Recording facility.
MMPS is delighted to announce its collaboration with Primedia for the comprehensive acoustic design and construction of five distinctive studio blocks located at 15 Fredman Drive, Sandton. These encompass the 702 and 947 Studio Blocks on the Ground Floor, the TV Studio Block incorporating the Creative Studio on the Ground Floor, the Main TV Studio on the Ground Floor, and the Production Studio Block on the First Floor. A total of 53 studios and related spaces.
Executing a project of this scale involved a meticulous approach, organized into four phases:
Phase 1 – Design, BOQ, and Budget:
MMPS initiated the project by conducting a thorough site survey and acoustic measurements, delivering acoustic specifications, and formulating conceptual studio designs and layouts. Detailed bill of quantities, construction costs, and regular meetings with the client and professional team were integral aspects. Our team also scrutinized architectural, interior, mechanical, and electrical designs to identify acoustic risks, offer guidance on electrical and mechanical layouts, and synchronize acoustic designs with other services. Additionally, we crafted conceptual designs for technical furniture and specialist lighting in radio and TV studios.
Phase 2 – Detail Design and Finishes:
In this stage, MMPS developed detailed construction and acoustic drawings for all studio blocks. Collaborating with the interior architect, we determined optimal acoustic layouts for Radio, Production, and TV Studios. A finishing schedule was established in conjunction with the interior architect.
Phase 3 – Building Works:
MMPS coordinated seamlessly with other services such as mechanical and electrical throughout the construction phase. Regular site meetings and daily inspections were conducted to swiftly identify potential clashes on-site. Rigorous quality control was applied to both the acoustic build and finishes.
In this stage, MMPS undertook the production, provision, and installation of all radio broadcast technical furniture. Our team crafted On-Air furniture with a specific focus on optimizing functionality for a visual radio setting taking into account sight lines from cameras to presenters as well as between presenters, ensuring a seamless and efficient broadcast experience.
MMPS was responsible for the provision and installation of radio studio broadcast lighting, guaranteeing optimal illumination for TV cameras.
Additionally, for the TV studios, MMPS supplied lighting grids, power systems, and data systems.
Phase 4 – Commissioning Phase:
The final phase involved MMPS delivering the ultimate bill of quantities and costs. Acoustic measurements and reporting were conducted with our Bedrock acoustic nalysers, and as-built drawings of the acoustic build(s) were generated. Compliance certificates were issued, and handover documentation, along with sign-off for the acoustic build and finishes in each block under MMPS’s scope of works, were provided.
MMPS remained unwaveringly committed to ensuring the successful completion of this project, guaranteeing a facility that will stand the test of time.
